Who Else Wants a College Tuition Reduction?
Dear Neighbor….
I remember when I was going to college and the stress this put on my family. Even if you have the money part figured out there is stress in deciding which schools to go, making sure all the deadlines are met, and hoping they get in to their top choice college.
I’m a local guy who grew up in East Detroit. About 4 years ago, I decided enough was enough and somebody has to help families avoid the mistakes my familiy did. I know families made mistakes because I have three degrees and my family went through the emotional roler coster. I have to admit I never started my life thinking I wanted to help families with college but really the cost of college has risen by over 35% since 2001. Somebody has to do something because the colleges are not listening!
Average College Tuition costs are rising!
I think I’m a lot like you. I believe money or knowledge should not stop your children from getting into any college they want and you should not have to sacrifice all your family resources! I started in this business actually by chance. A few years before going to college my dad lost his job at the gas company. The thing is I never really knew how bad it was for my parents. They protected my brother and me. I’m sure you can relate. My dad left every day but he was looking for work. A few years ago my mom told me that my dad had called her from a bar while looking for jobs. If you knew my dad….he’s never in a bar!
I went to college at U of D. By the time I started college my dad was working but he was not making much supporting my mom, brother Neil and me. My parents are awesome! Even though their resources were limited they never even questioned my school choice. U of D was certainly more expensive than Wayne or other local schools but they never said anything to turn me away. The thing is I still graduated with $25,000 in student loans and I was living at home! I always thought we had made some mistakes but nobody told us what they were. Each time I called the college they said to fill out the FAFSA and they would take care of it. You’ll find out that the colleges really can’t give special care to each and every family for two reasons. First the sheer number of kids in attendance but also they can’t give preferential treatment. If they spend a lot of time and give your family all the answers then they would have to do the same for everyone. It’s against Federal law. In reality it’s not your fault, the informatn information is really not easy to find. I remember talking with other kids and we would compare aid packages and most of them received more money even though I knew their families made more than mine. I remember thinking it was just not fair. They must know some other secret that my family did not. After I finished college and I started working, I ran into families who were having the same troubles. It’s then that I decided to go off and figure this process out. I have three college degrees so I’m really good with research! I spent hours and hours finding all the rules and researching what to do. I even found the mistakes my family made! I’ve seen firsthand, the difference the amount of tuition discount a family can receive and the reality is the information on the web does not talk about these
As I was started to understand how everything works and reflecting back on my experience I remember what it was like to build my house. I first started by looking at 7 – 10 different layouts. My friend is a builder and he helped me. I’d run the plans over to him and get his opinion on how the house would fit on the lot. You see, I had a whole list of criteria: I wanted a bigger back yard, keep many of the trees on the lot in tack, master bedroom more private from the neighbors. There is nothing like bouncing ideas off an expert. He had many little hints and tips that lead me to a much much better home. For example he convinced me I needed a full basement. Now when people come over and they compliment many of the features on the home…. I think of how it’s his advice helped. I went one time to the building department and asked some questions. They offered some superficial advice but I really did not feel they gave me the attention my friend did. We then drew up blueprints so we could come up with a budget. I was able to get some of the money from the banks to help me but some came out of my own pocket. The idea here was to us as little of my cash as possible because I had other things I needed…. like furniture, decorating, and landscaping. Eventually, When we started building and the blueprints made life a lot easier. I was amazed at how the trade’s people followed them and how they helped guide the process. What size windows to deliver, where to install them, how much insulation to install…everything. There were times during this that I had some surprises and doubts. I wondered if I was spending too much on this home, but in the end I was able to lower some things and increase others. This made a big difference because now people come over and comment how great the place is. I moved in on December 29th. Yep bad time of the year but as I sat in my new home that Christmas I was very happy that I had the input from my expert friend and created the blueprints which allowed me to handle changes and come under budget.
Now that I know what to do, it’s been shocking to see the difference this knowledge makes for families like you. I’m excited to share this with as many people as possible so I conduct workshops around the city to give away my knowledge. Knowledge is a very important part of our future to make sure America moves forward and we secure a stronger future for our kids. Families who have attended my workshop have left with a great feeling of relief that they better understand the financial aid system.
In fact, one family came to a workshop and learned one thing which saved them $15,000. They are not a client, but they were nice enough to call back and tell their story. Pretty cool!
Your probably wondering what you could learn at a free workshop! Maybe even the high school has had something. You’ve probably seen other types of free workshops advertised. Let me get this one out there. Nothing is sold! I won’t be in a suit and tie because in the evening I’d rather be more casual. I want to roll up my sleeves and give you a lot of facts that you can really use. These are free to you because you deserve this information! I do these for a few reasons.
- It’s one way I promote myself. If you like what I say you will tell others about me.
- I remember when my family was going through college and you deserve this information
- I never found this information out while going to college and I was saddled with $25,000 in student loans even though I lived at home.
Avoid those expensive private school loans.
I’ll answer these questions at the workshop:
1. Four questions to ask each university. If you know the answers to these you will have an insight to the university
2. I’ll show you the efc formula. I’ll give you the formula.
3. Show you the attributes you should have in your plan.
a. What innovative funding strategies can you use?
b. What sound planning strategies can save you 30% off the cost of college?
I’ll even show you how your children can influence how much money you will pay for college…..In fact they have such an influence that it can overpower the financial aid system!
Dear Neighbor….
I’m Mike Humann from the College Planning Coach. I’m writing to you today because I just returned home from a family gathering at my cousin’s house. While I was there, I had one of those life moments. Remember a time when you had one of those moments when you relized time was passing by? If you can remember, then you can understand why I could not wait another minute to get this off my chest.

You see most everyone was at the gathering, my parents, Aunt and Uncle (Walter and Loretta), first cousins, their spouses, and children. My cousin, Laura, has two daughter’s Kaitlin -11 and Emma – 8. They are my favorite 2nd cousins! The minute I walk in the door they grab me and want to play. Today I played Wii sports with them…..Emma beat me pretty bad but she is shorter than me and closer to the TV (I’m 6’5” and she is like 4’ J . I can’t believe how much they’ve grown and matured. My cousin is raising two great kids! My girlfriend and I were talking on the way home and reflecting how quickly time has passed. We’ve watched them grow up. I’m home now sitting in my office thinking about you and families just like you, whose children might be heading off to college in the next few years. I’m sure time has passed quickly and now your children are ready for college. I remember when I was going to college and the stress this put on my family. Even if you have the money part figured out there is stress in deciding which schools to go, making sure all the deadlines are met, and hoping they get in to their top choice college.
