3 Things Students Can Do During the Summer

by College Funding on

From the desk of Mike Humann:

Summertime: According to Webster’s Dictionary it’s “the season of the year in a region in which the sun shines most directly.”  But when I was in college I would have defined summertime as “the season I don’t have to worry about homework, midterms, surprise quizzes, or tuition; a time to hang out at the beach with friends and wake up late.”

In today’s faster paced, Internet-connected world though, the fact is that at least a portion of a student’s summertime needs to be used preparing for the next term, particularly as it relates to your college financing. Okay, I understand the need to enjoy the summer and take a break from the rigors of college and these steps don’t have to take up too much time.  Maybe just cut out a few TV shows in the morning or mid-afternoon.  I promise you won’t even miss the shows.  This does not have to take up all your summer….you deserve the break.
Here are 5 smart tips to make sure you stay on course:

  • Free Money: These summer months are a great time to surf the net for free money for college, which of course would decrease the amount of funds you need to borrow or get from your parents.  There are many, many scholarships with varying deadline dates.  They range from merit-based to free scholarships with minimal requirements.
  • Class Availability/Schedule: When you’re new to college, you often get the shaft when it comes to your schedule because you don’t know which professors or classes are popular or why. You can find this out ahead of time by doing some research and talking to other students. Then check for updates on class enrollment numbers and see if you can do some juggling.  You should be able to access those details online or even call the college.
  • Loan Order: Your awards letter from the school will highlight your loan options.  The most common loan type, which students secure first, is a Stafford loan.  The Stafford loan is listed in the student’s name.  Take care of your paperwork in August rather than September, when everybody else is trying to get their loans in order.  Getting a head start will make the start of your school year easier.  After all, you have to find the class buildings.   This applies also for private student loans.  Don’t wait until the last minute.

Not so bad right?  Now go get it done.
