Summertime: According to Webster’s Dictionary it’s: the season of the year in a region in which the sun shines most directly. Ok that’s Webster’s version and not a very good definition. I mean it really does not get me excited about summertime. Does it for you? When I was in college I would have defined summertime as: the season I don’t have to worry about homework, midterms, surprise quizzes, or tuition; A time when I can go to the beach and blow off steam with my friends and wake up late. The fact is that summertime is not only a time to relax but it’s a great time to prepare for the next term. The actions you take, however, during the summertime can influence your college financing.
Okay, I understand the need to enjoy the summer and take a break from the rigors of college but putting some of these activities into your summer schedule will make you manage your college financing options. These steps don’t have to take up too much time. Maybe just cut out a few TV shows in the morning or mid-afternon. I promise you won’t even miss the shows. This does not have to take up all your summer….you deserve the break.
Here are 5 smart tips to make sure you stay on course:
- Free Money: These summer months are a great time to surf the net for free money for college, which of course would decrease the amount of funds you need to borrow. There are many scholarships. They range from merit based to free scholarships with minimal requirements.
- Class Availability/Schedule: When you’re new to college you often get the shaft when it comes to your schedule. You might not know who are the popular professors or classes. Check for updates on class enrollment numbers. You should be able to access those details online or even call the college.
- Loan Order: Your awards letter from the school will highlight your loan options. The most common loan type, which students secure first, is a Stafford loan. The Stafford loan is listed in the student’s name. Take care of your paper work in August rather than September. September is when everybody else is trying to get their loans in order. Getting a head start will make the start of your school year easier. After all, you have to find the class buildings. This applies also for private student loans. Don’t wait for the last minute.
Not so bad right? No go get it done.
